A Brief History of the WTA - Steven E. Hastings, Secretary / Treasurer

The Wilmington Trapshooting Association (WTA) traces its roots to the duPont Gun Club; organized in November 1910 with the duPont Company as it financial backer.  This Club existed and sponsored shoots until it disbanded in October of 1915. Many of the same shooters incorporated a new shooting club, WTA, the following year, 1916. This was a “share holder” club with Alfred I. and William DuPont as large share holders. This version of WTA ceased to exist in 1971 when the “share holder” club was voted out of existence and replaced with a “membership” organization. At the same time, the “new” WTA was merged with the Frenchtown Sportsmen’s Association, a separate trapshooting corporation formed to buy and hold property in Glasgow, DE – the grounds of WTA today. WTA was deemed to be the “surviving “ entity of the merger. The original 29 acres of ATA’s home grounds was purchased in 1959. The property today exceeds 40 acres and offers 14 trap fields and the Biggs’ Skeet Fields.  Millions of trap and skeet targets have been thrown on these grounds over the last 50 years.
